Chapter 9

He was glaring at her. "How old are these damn things?"

"Marsh—"

"Just answer me. How old?"

She did not like his accusing tone, not one bit. "I told you last night. A few years."

"A few years." He swore again. "What is the date on them?"

She picked up the box, found the date stamped on the side. "Well," she said, wishing she could just fall through the floor. "The news is not good."

"Say it."

"The date already went by – but only just barely." He took the box from her, read the date, swore again. "We should have checked the damn date."

Like she needed to hear that now. "Yes, we should have. But we didn't, did we?"

"And what brand is this? I've never even heard of it."

"Is that some kind of an accusation?"

"These things are usually the next thing to indestructible. Damn it, Tory. A condom is not something you should try to get a bargain on."

"I didn't. I'm sorry. I'm no expert on those things." He made a low, disgusted noise in his throat. "I do not believe this." Then he left her, just swung his legs off the bed and stalked toward her bathroom. She heard the toilet flush and then water running in the sink.

Seconds later, he was back. He flicked on a lamp and snatched up his boxer shorts. He shoved his legs into them. Then he went to the pile of clothes on the easy chair and untangled his pants and his shirt from them. He pulled on the clothes.

She sat in the bed, hugging the covers, counting the days since her last period.

Not good. Not good at all.

He came back to the small chair by the bureau, grabbed his belt and put it on. Then he dropped into the chair and shoved his feet into his shoes and his socks.

Fully dressed, though slightly rumpled and clearly in need of a shave, he stood again. He regarded her through eyes she found impossible to read. "You look terrified."

She made herself shrug. "Well, I'm not. I mean, come on. What are the odds that it could happen again with us?" She expected him to reassure her that the odds were very slim.

Apparently, he was not in a reassuring frame of mind. "We've already proven once that it can happen with us. So now it's probably just a question of whether or not it's the time of the month when you're likely to get pregnant."

She cut her eyes away, which, of course, told him everything he needed to know. Outside she could hear a mocker squawking. But inside, the silence was truly deafening.

He broke it by swearing some more. "It's the right time of the month for you, isn't it?"

She still wouldn't look at him. But she did admit, "It's the time when I should be the most careful, yes."

He muttered something under his breath – no doubt more swear words. "What a damn mess."

She yanked her sagging shoulders up straight. "Oh, stop it. There's no point in getting all stirred up about this right now.
